Just like in the structure of the human brain, there’s two hemispheres within the modern media newsrooms that share the task of harmoniously articulating the practices and strategies of the newest journalism model during this digital age.
So as the right hemisphere of the brain controls the muscles of the left side of the body and vice versa, the dynamics of an integrated newsroom manage to combine the contents of the printed platform with those of the digital, with different style features.
In the printed version, it’s necessary to make an adequate combination of texts, photographs and graphic elements so that the reading remains attractive, taking care of the accuracy and objectivity of the contents while adding the values of truthfulness and reliability, plus a very high-quality of its redaction, only possible by following the golden rules of a professional journalism.
In the digital world, the speed with which the news are transmitted and the support of audiovisual resources through very advanced technological tools are far from what’s essential in the printed format.
Thus knowing how to combine the dynamics of both worlds results in one of the most stupendous challenges faced by today’s journalism, which must produce satisfactory content for all audiences without letting either platform lose its original identity.
A novelty in this stage is the close awareness and approach with the audiences. That is, knowing who reads, which topics are the most popular, how much time is dedicated to them, how quick they read and at what times it’s done, in addition to all the opposite of that.
Yesteryear, the printed newspapers used to identify four categories: readers of general news, whether metropolitan or provincial; female readers with their intrigue about health, culture, social life, entertainment and education; sports fans; and the economy enthusiasts.
To some extent, this previous set of “targets” is still visible in the more recent and renewed formats, which makes sense since the new audiences prefer a multiple source of data so as not to spend a lot of time searching for such references.
To distinguish itself from the torrent of fake or manipulated news, specially in the digital space, the printed newspapers now strive to enhance the scoops, analyzes, comments, chronicles and reports that explain reality as is, because these hold much proximity to the readers and their deepest fibers of human sensitivity regarding their particular interests.
